- On January 14th, I was joined by my family and close friends as I was sworn in as your State Senator. It is an honor to represent you, and I continue to work hard for our community and state. State of the State message
Gov. Snyder delivered his 2015 State of the State address on January 20th, in which he highlighted Michigan's economic gains, including the creation of more than 300,000 private sector jobs since 2011. I am that proud our reform efforts over the past several years have helped create a positive environment for job growth.
Along with continuing efforts to improve the economy, I was pleased to see an emphasis on education and training opportunities so our students are prepared for success. I also applaud the governor's focus on making government more accountable by maximizing state resources on results, not bureaucracy.
Michigan has made great strides, yet there is still much more to do. I am excited for the challenges ahead as we work together on behalf of Michigan's hardworking families. Jobless rate falls to lowest point in 12 years!
Michigan's unemployment rate declined to 6.3 percent in December, the lowest monthly rate since November 2002. The decline represents a full two-point drop from December 2013.
State officials also noted that Michigan's labor market was particularly strong in the second half of 2014. I look forward to building on this good news and working to keep the momentum going. Bringing more jobs to our area remains one of my top priorities. Free fishing weekend promises winter fun
Why not make it a special Valentine's Day weekend and head for the great outdoors? Michigan's annual Winter Free Fishing Weekend falls on February 14-15 this year.
All fishing license fees are waived for the two days. Residents and out-of-state visitors can enjoy fishing on both inland and Great Lakes waters for all species of fish. All fishing regulations will still apply. Visit www.michigan.gov/freefishing
