New laws target meth production

According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Michigan is among the top five states for the number of incidents of meth labs and dump sites found by police.

But a new law that I supported will enhance existing efforts to help deter the production of this dangerous drug. Laws that went into effect in 2014 made the organized group purchasing of products containing pseudoephedrine to cook meth, a practice also known as smurfing, a felony. The recently signed new law creates additional criminal penalties for anyone who attempts to solicit another’s help in acquiring pseudoephedrine products.

To better protect children from this destructive drug activity, I supported another new law to strengthen the penalties for making meth near a school or library.

Meth is a highly addictive drug that has a devastating impact on users and their families and communities.

Public Threat Alert System becomes law

In an emergency, it’s important to get the word out quickly to keep people safe.

I recently supported a package of bills, now signed into law, which will establish the Public Threat Alert System to warn Michigan residents of dangerous incidents, like a terrorist threat or active shooter situation. Similar to the Amber Alert process, the system will rapidly disseminate information about emergencies over television, radio and wireless devices.

To discourage hoaxes, Public Acts 234-236 of 2016 will also make it a felony for intentionally making a false report, and require offenders to reimburse law enforcement for expenses incurred as a result of the false report.

The bills were introduced in response to the February mass shootings in Kalamazoo County.
