Thoughts on the State of the State address

Gov. Snyder recently delivered his 2015 State of the State address, in which he highlighted Michigan's economic gains, including the creation of more than 300,000 private sector jobs since 2011. I am that proud our reform efforts over the past several years have helped create a positive environment for job growth.

Along with continuing efforts to improve the economy, I was pleased to see an emphasis on education and training opportunities so our students are prepared for success. I also applaud the governor's focus on making government more accountable by maximizing state resources on results, not bureaucracy.

Michigan has made great strides, yet there is still much more to do. I am excited for the challenges ahead as we work together on behalf of Michigan's hardworking families.

March is reading month!

As the Chairman of the Senate Education committee, I am challenging my fellow lawmakers to read to 1,000 students as part of March is reading month. If you would like to have me come to your school to read, please call my office at 517.373.7708. I may not be able to accommodate everyone, but will get to as many as I can throughout the month!

Michigan Sugar Company Tour

In January, I had the pleasure of touring the Michigan Sugar Company. The company's flagship plant, built in 1901, is one of their four facilities in Michigan-all located in or near the Thumb, including a plant in Croswell in Sanilac County and one in Sebewaing in Huron County.

The Michigan Sugar Company is one of the great success stories of Michigan. They are locally grown and locally owned, and they are as committed to the success of the area growers as they are to the bottom line.

During conversations I had with Rick Gerstenberger, chairman of the board of directors for Michigan Sugar Company, he explained that the Croswell and Sebewaing plants are scheduled for major capital improvements that will help protect jobs across the Thumb.

Michigan Sugar Company plays an important role in Michigan's $100 billion agriculture industry. The cooperative has more than 1,000 grower-owners, making them a major employer in the region. Today the organization is the only remaining sugar company in the state.

Free fishing weekend promises winter fun

Why not make it a special Valentine's Day weekend and head for the great outdoors? Michigan's annual Winter Free Fishing Weekend falls on February 14-15 this year.

All fishing license fees are waived for the two days. Residents and out-of-state visitors can enjoy fishing on both inland and Great Lakes waters for all species of fish. All fishing regulations will still apply. Visit for more information, including details on special events.

See you around the district,
