Drone bills fly through Senate

The Michigan Senate passed legislation last week to protect hunters and natural resources. These bills, which I sponsored with Sen. Tom Casperson, outlaw the use of drones to harass hunters or anglers and also prohibit the use of drones for taking game.

We introduced the bills after seeing news articles quoting anti-hunting groups encouraging the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV)-or "drones"-to stalk or spy on hunters. In working on the legislation, sportsmen also asked that the bills prohibit the use of UAVs while hunting to comply with what some call "fair chase" policies.

Using remote-controlled, camera-equipped aircraft to locate wildlife in order to shoot and kill them is not sport. We passed laws several years ago banning the practice of computer-assisted hunting in Michigan to help preserve the purity and the challenge of hunting game. These bills will continue these same kinds of protections.

SBs 54 and 55 have been sent to the House of Representatives for further consideration.

March is reading month!

As the Chairman of the Senate Education committee, I am challenging my fellow lawmakers to read to 1,000 students as part of March is reading month. If you would like to have me come to your school to read, please call my office at 517.373.7708. I may not be able to accommodate everyone, but will get to as many as I can throughout the month!

I hope to see you around the district,

Phil Pavlov
