MacGregor backs bill to help veterans transition to civilian life

Our servicemen and women have made great sacrifices to protect our country. It's important to do all we can to assist them as they return home.

Under legislation passed by the Senate, the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA) will take over the responsibility of sending "welcome home" letters to returning veterans about state and local veterans service organizations and tools to help the transition to civilian life. The agency was launched two years ago with the mission of connecting Michigan's more than 660,000 veterans and their families with services and benefits. Adding the welcome home outreach will give veterans a true one-stop-shop for information and assistance. Senate Bill 52 has been sent to the Michigan House for consideration.

For more information about the MVAA, please visit or call 1-800-MICH-VET.

Best in the Midwest

Since the end of 2010, Michigan has added more private sector jobs than any other state in the Midwest! The gain of nearly 400,000 private sector jobs, including 105,000 in manufacturing, means the state trails only California, Texas, Florida and New York in job growth.

In other good news, the state unemployment rate fell to 5.6 percent in March, nearly the same as the national rate of 5.5 percent. The decline represents a two-point drop from March 2014.

Prepare for weather emergencies

After a long winter, there's nothing like a Michigan spring! Yet weather this time of year can bring thunderstorms, lightning and high winds along with warm temperatures. Severe Weather Awareness Week, recognized this year from April 12-18 in Michigan, reminds us to prepare for inclement weather.

Check the Michigan State Police website at for what to do before, during and after any type of emergency.
