Budget InfographicBudget continues Michigan's positive momentum

The Legislature recently finished up work on the state budget, and for the sixth consecutive year, we wrapped it up months before the start of the new fiscal year.

The plan reflects the priorities of Michigan families, including quality education for our children and public health and safety, while providing a strong foundation for economic growth. Some of the key investments include:

  • Increased funding for K-12 and higher education, providing more than $14 billion for education;
  • Full funding of the Healthy Kids Dental Program to include children in all 83 counties;
  • Added funds to hire 65 new State Police Troopers;
  • More funding to assist homeless veterans and create a Veterans Home Ombudsman; and
  • Increased funding for career and technical education to train workers for high-demand jobs.

At the same time, the budget strengthens the state's finances by paying down over $1 billion in debt and continues our commitment to fiscal responsibility by ensuring government lives within its means.

MacGregor backs bill to ensure students learn CPR

Each year, 350,000 Americans suffer from cardiac arrest. Someone trained in administering CPR can make the difference between life and death.

I recently supported a Senate bill to ensure that students in grades 7 to 12 receive instruction on CPR and the use of an automatic external defibrillator as part of their health education requirement. Under the legislation, schools would be encouraged to use local resources, such as paramedics, police officers or trained teachers, to provide the instruction.

Senate Bill 647 has been sent to the House for consideration. If signed into law, Michigan would join 32 other states requiring CPR training prior to high school graduation.

FishingEnjoy summer fun by fishing in Michigan

With 154 species of native and naturalized fish, there's no better way to enjoy the great outdoors than fishing in Michigan! Anglers can find regional information on conditions and fishing hot spots, as well as fishing tips, at the DNR's Weekly Fishing Report. Access it online at or call toll-free 855-777-0908 for a recorded message. The fishing website also includes a page on Family Friendly Fishing Waters. The water bodies are identified as family friendly based on ease of access, amenities (restrooms!) and high likelihood of success in catching fish. Other information includes geographic location, hours of operation, species of fish available, typical bait and more.

I want to thank Tim Kruithoff for inviting me to ride along with him during the spring corn planting season. I learned about the equipment, processes, seeds, chemistry, and the hurdles today's farmers go through to feed our communities, our state and the rest of the world. Even though the equipment is high tech now, it's still long days for these hardworking farmers and amazing what they do for the rest of us. Thanks Tim! You're going to be a great resource for this legislator. Kent City, MI

I met both Tanner and Addie today who are two of the young children I had the pleasure of meeting during this walk. Both children are afflicted with arthritis and events like this helps bring awareness to their condition and raise money for research and possibly find a cure for these sweet kids.
