MacGregor supports bill to help students improve reading

Reading is fundamental to academic and future success. Students with poor reading skills are less likely to go to college, even to graduate from high school.

I recently supported legislation to make sure students receive the early reading intervention services they need to help them read at grade level by the end of third grade. If reading skills lag at that age, it becomes more and more difficult for them to catch up in later years. Under the legislation, schools would be required to assess the reading skills of K-3 students, provide individual reading improvement plans and use early literacy coaches. Parental involvement is an important part of this process.

Starting in the 2019-20 school year, some students would not automatically be promoted to fourth grade if they are more than one grade level behind the third-grade reading proficiency level, although “good cause” exemptions could be granted.

Third grade is considered a pivotal time because it is the last year students “learn to read” before they “read to learn.” Improving early literacy helps ensure all Michigan children are on the path to a bright future.

House Bill 4822 has been sent to the governor for consideration.

Michigan recognized as a leader in digital government

For the fourth consecutive time, Michigan was awarded an “A” grade in the biennial Digital States Survey. The state received a top grade for its effective use of technology to serve citizens. Michigan provides more than 300 digital services that allow residents and other customers the ability to do business with the state. Find a list of online services at www.michigan.gov.

Michigan also earned a first place award in cybersecurity in an annual competition sponsored by the National Association of State Chief Information Officers.

Ok2Say tip line promotes student safety

State officials recently kicked off another school year for the OK2Say program. The school safety program provides a confidential way for students to report tips about potential harm or threats. OK2SAY was launched in 2014 to help ensure that students who might otherwise remain silent can speak up without fear.

In the 2015 school year, more than 2,100 tips were received, including 23 tips regarding planned school attacks, 7 tips regarding guns and 396 tips regarding suicide threats.

Students can anonymously submit tips by phone at 1-855-565-2729, by text message at 652729 (OK2SAY), by email at ok2say@mi.gov or through the website at www.mi.gov/ok2say. More information is available at the website.

It’s your right — take the time to vote!

Voting is one of our most cherished rights. But before you can cast a ballot, you must be registered to vote - Tuesday, Oct. 11 is the last day to register in Michigan for the November general election.

You can register by mail, at your local clerk’s office or at any Secretary of State branch office. You must be a U.S. citizen, 18 years old by Election Day (Nov. 8) and a resident of Michigan and the city or township where you are applying to register. Find a helpful step-by-step guide at www.Michigan.gov/elections.

You can check to see if you are already registered to vote, find your polling place or take a look at your sample ballot at www.Michigan.gov/vote.

To date, there are nearly 7.4 million registered voters in Michigan.
