Michigan Senate Delivers Tax Relief to Taxpayers

All of these measures happened in recent years with the goal of smart and prudent management of your state resources.

Tax Season: Still Have Time to File

DUE DATE CLARIFICATION TO SHARE: The due date is April 18, 2017, and not April 15, 2017. That's because April 15, 2017, falls on a Saturday which would normally result in a move to the following Monday (April 17, 2017). However, this year, Emancipation Day falls on Monday, April 17. Since that's a legal holiday in the District of Columbia, the tax filing deadline will be pushed ahead for all individual taxpayers to Tuesday, April 18, 2017.

HELP WITH TAX PREPARATION: Volunteers from local community organizations help prepare basic tax returns for the elderly and for low to moderate-income constituents (approximately $53,000 and below). This service is available through the following main resources. Contact these organizations for their days/hours of operation and location(s):

- Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) at 1-800-906-9887.
- AARP at 1-888-227-7669 or visit their website at this link.

INTERNET SELF-SERVICE is the quickest and easiest way to check on a MICHIGAN income tax refund 24/7: All you need is a copy of your income tax return in order to find out when your return is estimated to come to you: http://www.michigan.gov/taxes/0,4676,7-238-43513_74865---,00.html

RECEIVED AN “IDENTITY CONFIRMATION QUIZ” LETTER ABOUT YOUR STATE INCOME TAX RETURN? This means the Michigan Department of Treasury is protecting your refund from tax fraud by verifying your identity. The department explains that more here: http://www.michigan.gov/taxes/0,4676,7-238-43513_73927_73928---,00.html
