Robertson supports call for federal balanced budget amendmentIt is sobering to realize that our national debt is currently more than $17.5 trillion, larger than our entire gross national product.
That's why I co-sponsored a Senate resolution to petition Congress to call a convention of the states for the limited purpose of proposing a balanced budget amendment to the United States constitution. This common sense amendment would require an annual federal budget in which spending does not exceed revenues, except in the case of a national emergency.
Twenty-two other states have already approved the resolution. Once adopted by 15 more, Congress must issue the call. A balanced budget amendment proposed by the convention would have to be ratified by three-fourths of the states before taking effect.
Washington would do well to live by the fiscal discipline practiced by families all across Michigan: don't spend money you don't have.
New law recognizes sacrifices made by many Vietnam veteransSenate legislation recently signed into law will allow schools to award a high school diploma to honorably discharged veterans who served in the Vietnam War instead of completing high school.
Under the new law, an application form for the diploma would be submitted to the school district the veteran was enrolled in at the time of enlistment and could be completed by the veteran or on his or her behalf by a spouse, sibling, child or grandchild.
Previously, school boards were able to award diplomas to veterans of World War II and the Korean conflict. I am pleased the law now allows us to recognize and honor another generation of servicemen and women for the sacrifices they made to serve our country.
