Sgt. Travis Mills to lead Senate Memorial ServiceDear Friends,
I am pleased to announce that Vassar native Army Sgt. Travis Mills will be the keynote speaker at the 19th Annual Michigan Senate Memorial Service on Thursday, May 23 at 10 a.m. in the Senate chamber of the Capitol building.
The service is held every year to honor Michigan residents who have given their lives to their nation while serving in the armed forces during the previous year. I can think of no one better to lead us in remembering his fallen colleagues than Sergeant Mills.
The somber yet inspiring event includes the Kalamazoo Pipe Band bagpipes, flag bearers from veterans' posts all around the state, the Michigan National Guard Honor Guard, and active duty service members, veterans, their families and families of the fallen. During the service, the name of every fallen soldier, sailor, airman and marine is called as a flag is placed in a memorial basket in their honor.
The ceremony is open to the public. As space in the Senate gallery is very limited, I encourage you to arrive early. Overflow viewing rooms will be provided. You may also view the event live on the internet at www.senate.michigan.gov.
Local veterans posts interested in participating can still sign up by contacting the office of Sen. John Pappageorge, a retired Army colonel who organizes the event, at (517) 373-2523.
May Office HoursMay office hours have been scheduled for the 31st Senate District this Friday, May 17 at the Reese Municipal Building, 2073 Gates Street, Reese, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.
