Around the District

In January I began my second term representing the 28th Senate District. I have also been chosen by my colleagues in the Senate to serve as Senate Majority Floor leader for this legislative session. With this honor comes the responsibility of organizing and managing the day-to-day floor activity of the Michigan Senate.

What I love most about serving in the Legislature is the opportunity to meet with and talk to so many of you in our community. I encourage you to contact me with any state issues. You may call toll-free at 1-855-347-8028 or email Let me know if I can assist you in any way or if you have an idea to help move our state forward.

I am pleased to announce that Rob VerHeulen will be joining my staff as my district representative. Rob is the former State Representative from the 74th district, which shares some of the same communities as the 28th Senate District. Rob will be available to attend school board meetings and other local community meetings on my behalf. Please feel free to contact Rob directly if there are local issues or events you want to make me aware of. Rob can be reached at (616) 826-6320.

On January 14, I attended the installation of Walker Mayor Gary Carey, Jr. The Mayor's office was vacated when the previous Mayor, Mark Huizenga was elected to represent the 74th House District. By City Charter the Mayor Pro-Tem is appointed to fill the Mayors role. Mayor Carey has represented the 2nd Ward of Walker as a City Commissioner since January of 2013.

On January 18, we said goodbye to former Mayor James Buck of Grandville. Mayor Buck served the City of Grandville for nearly thirty years. Mayor Buck was an outstanding example of a true public servant.

The West Michigan Whitecaps held a "Step Up to the Plate" event on January 24th. The event raised more than $40,000 for the Whitecaps Community Foundation and for the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids Inner City Youth Baseball and Softball Program.

State Representative Mark Huizenga and I held joint office hours on January 25th at Herman's Boy in Rockford. Thank you to each of you who came out to meet with us. It was a wonderful opportunity to hear directly from constituents about issues that are important to them. If you were unable to attend office hours but wish to meet with me, please contact my office to set up a time.

Later that day I attended the Grandville Jenison Chamber 10th Annual Meeting luncheon and awards ceremony. It was a wonderful celebration of the amazing changes that have taken place over the last decade to Grandville and Jenison and to look ahead to the exciting things to come in the next decade.

That evening, I was pleased to join the Wyoming-Kentwood Area Chamber of Commerce's 38th Annual Meeting. It was a wonderful celebration of the businesses and organizations that contribute to the Wyoming-Kentwood communities and the work the Chamber does to bring us all together.

The Huntin' Time Expo, Michigan's Largest Hunting Show, was held January 25th-27th at the Delta Plex Arena. I enjoyed walking through the expo's more than 350 booths and visiting with constituents, vendors, and hunting enthusiasts from all over Michigan.
